A mis(e-en-scène)ophonist’s non-saga
A mis(e-en-scène)ophonist’s non-saga focuses on ordinary people trying to find their place inside the modern city. It tells a non-epic story centered on the imaginary encounter between two urban beings, a human and a bird, the European robin (Erithacus rubecula). It is an investigation into the particularities of our subjective perceptions of noise and its influence on human relationships. The robin reclaims its place in the public space, weaving with it singing a metaphorical thread that invites us to reflect personally and collectively on the search for isolation or connection within the noisy urban landscape. Through an open call, daily commuters that routinely use headphones in the public space, are invited to be exposed to a soundscape. Their reactions are captured by the photographer in their portraits. In the sound piece they were listening to, a robin attempts to outsing the various noises of the urban public space. Sound artist duo Enventless Plot collaborated with the photographer for the composition of the piece, using field recordings that were gathered by the photographer in his photowalks. At the same time a 3D-printed European robin, hand-painted by the photographer, is exploring human remains in areas near its nest. The photographer places the fake bird in the near perimeter of the European Robin nesting grounds on top of human remnants. Images of the real bird blend with its staged sibling. A broken panorama of the bird on an abandoned bike, reveals the staging.
